British material factory Smartkem released OTFT Micro LED display sample
May 27, 2024
During this SID display Week, Micro LED display technology and products were wonderful, and new and old players competed on the same stage, covering many links of the industrial chain. Smartkem, a UK developer of organic materials dedicated to organic thin film transistor backboards (OTFT), is also exhibiting samples of Micro LED displays based on its proprietary OTFT material for the first time at SID 2024.
The demonstration sample is a graphic array of 96x96 Micro leds based on a sapphire substrate, which is planized using Smartkem materials. Then, through the photolithography and etching technology is formed on the device contact plate, and after sputtering to form a metal layer, the anode and cathode contact of the Micro LED are finally formed graphically. The metal connection is selective and produces the pattern image displayed.
Samples will be further processed in the future to deposit Smartkem's OTFT material, and the direct drive connection will be replaced by a drive TFT connection, which can be addressed in matrix form to prepare an AM active drive display.
Smartkem said that from the exhibitors of the display week, the industry has widely recognized the inherent advantages of high reliability and high brightness of Micro LED displays and the inevitability of large-scale applications, and Smartkem's OTFT technology can be used through its low temperature treatment. Help achieve high performance and mass production of Micro leds at a lower cost.
It is also worth mentioning that in 2022, SmartKem announced a collaboration with Nanosys in the United States to develop a new generation of low-cost solutions for advanced displays, printed Micro leds and quantum dot materials.
