Samsung Releases New Generation Onyx LED Movie Screen
April 8, 2025
On April 1, Samsung Electronics released its latest Onyx (ICD model) cinema LED screen at CinemaCon 2025. Onyx is the world's first DCI-certified Class 1 cinema-grade LED display, with high contrast and color accuracy, and supports up to 4K 120Hz frame rate to enhance the viewing experience.
The product is available in four standard sizes and supports flexible scaling to meet the needs of different theaters: 5 meters (16 feet), suitable for small theaters, with a pixel pitch of 1.25 mm; 10 meters (33 feet), the industry standard size, with a pixel pitch of 2.5 mm; 14 meters (46 feet), suitable for medium-sized theaters, with a pixel pitch of 3.3 mm; 20 meters (66 feet), suitable for large-scale theaters, with a pixel pitch of 5.0 mm.
Onyx Cinema LED screens natively support 2.39:1 and 1.85:1 aspect ratios, and can maintain the ratio when zoomed in to reduce image distortion. Unlike traditional projection, LED technology can maintain color accuracy at higher brightness and supports Samsung HDR technology, with a peak brightness of 300 nits (87.6fL).
The screen can be used for traditional movie screenings, as well as live sports, concerts, gaming events and corporate presentations. Samsung provides a 10-year warranty for Onyx and is equipped with an automatic calibration function to ensure long-term stability. In addition, Onyx is compatible with Dolby and GDC media servers, and supports cinema audio systems such as Dolby Atmos, Meyer Sound and QSC, allowing theaters to adjust sound effects according to demand.
Recently, the Pathé Palace Cinema in Paris has installed the device to enhance the audio-visual experience of the theater.
